Hilltoppers make quick work of first-round foe

November 6, 2009

Running backs Adam Bruere and Pierre Washington Steel had touchdown runs to help top-seeded Glenbard West down No. 16 Rockford Guilford 28-0 in Class 7A first-round play.

The game was played at Addison Trail High School because of field conditions at Glenbard West's Duchon Field.

The win pushed West, ranked No. 2 by the Chicago Sun-Times, to 10-0.

Rockford Guilford finishes the season at 5-5.

Tyler Warden threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to J.T. Mesch and Steve Jones recovered a fumble in the end zone.

"We thought it would be easier than it was, but we respected (Guilford)," Bruere said. "Our defense played great and swarmed to the ball with great speed. They put us in great position all game."

Next up for West is a road trip to face No. 9 Rockton Hononegah (8-2) on Nov. 7 at 1 p.m.
