Briefs: Trio to perform at College Church
The Melius Trio will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday at College Church in Wheaton.
The trio is composed of violinist Charles Gray, cellist David Carter and pianist Kent McWilliams. The Wheaton performance will include the "Trio in E Flat Major" by Haydn, "Trio No. 1 in D Minor" by Mendelssohn and a new work by Christos Hatzis entitled "Old Photographs."
All concerts are in the sanctuary of College Church in Wheaton, at Seminary Avenue and Washington Street. An offering will be accepted. A reception will follow the concert in the Fireside Narthex.

Through Nov. 12, Restor Healing Centre is going to give $1 for each pound of candy received to the People's Resource Center. The candy will be shipped to the troops in Afghanistan.
"Our kids always get way too much candy," said Dr. Kris Sargent of Restor Healing Centre. "We just figured out what to do with it in a way that will serve our community and our country at the same time."

Historian George Webber will offer a look at trench art pieces from World War I and II as well as war-related collectibles that were popular at that time.
Trench art was made by soldiers during their idle hours.

The open house is geared toward middle school students of all faiths, particularly those enrolled in sixth, seventh or eighth grades.
St. Francis is a college preparatory, coed, Catholic high school. Faculty will be present during the open house, and tours of the facility will be conducted.

The president of the Illinois Fire Apparatus Mechanics Association visited the Public Works garage Oct. 21 to inform Fleet Maintenance Superintendent Morris Anderson that he won the association's 2009 Emergency Vehicle Technician of the Year award.
Larry Polas, manager of Global Emergency Products, nominated Anderson for the award based on more than 20 years of working with him. In his nomination letter, Polas characterized Anderson as "an individual who has consistently bolstered the reputation of all of us in transportation over the span of his working career."
While Anderson has served as fleet maintenance superintendent for four years, he has worked in fire apparatus maintenance for about 15 years, and his career in the Public Works fleet industry spans approximately 35 years.
"Mo is the consummate professional, and the city is very fortunate to have a talented and respected individual overseeing the city's fleet," said Vince Laoang, director of public works.

Luminaria are sold in sets of five candles and five bags for $5. All proceeds from the sale will help the Infant Welfare Society provide health care to needy women and children.

Illinois received $174.6 million in federal funds to assist low-income families this winter. Applications are now being accepted.
A single-person household can qualify with a monthly income of up to $1,354; a two-person household up to $1,821; and a family of four can earn up to $2,756. Benefits are paid directly to utilities on behalf of eligible households. The exception is households whose heating costs are included in their rent.
The energy grant applications are processed through a network of 35 local administering agencies around the state. In DuPage County, residents should contact the DuPage County Department of Human Services at 630-407-6500. The office is located at 421 N. County Farm Road in Wheaton.
Applications are accepted on a first-come, first served basis from eligible households.
Guests will hear about the group's plans for the coming year as they enjoy a gourmet meal, a cooking demonstration and some jazz music.
Individual contributions of $40 will benefit health and wellness programs throughout the DuPage area.
