Holiday book sale at Wheaton Library

Wheaton Public Library will hold its holiday book sale from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 13, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 14 and 1 to 5 p.m. Nov. 15.

The sale will feature gift books, coffee table books, first editions and more.

The sale is sponsored by the Friends of the Wheaton Public Library, with proceeds going to benefit the library.

Wheaton man joins hospital board

Swedish Covenant Hospital has announced that Charles L. Adair of Wheaton has joined its 20-member board of directors.

Adair has nearly 30 years of experience in food and agribusiness industries.

Breakfast meeting set at Wheaton church

"The Endangered Species: Christians in the Holy Land" is the theme of an informational breakfast set for 8:30 a.m. Nov. 7 at First Presbyterian Church, 715 N. Carlton Ave. in Wheaton.

The Rev. Don Wagner, professor and director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at North Park University, will discuss current events at the breakfast.

Wagner is the author of several books tracing the history and present crisis in the Holy Land. Tickets are $15, $7 for students with an ID.

Musical instruments donated to kids in need

The Wheaton Band Festival collected 45 musical instruments this year that are being given to disadvantaged children and teens.

With the instruments, the young people can join music classes, bands and summer music camps offered by the Salvation Army.

DuPage County residents donated all of the instruments including three tubas, 12 trombones, five clarinets, three trumpets, three cornets, three French horns, five violins and two guitars. Most of the contributions were made just prior to or following the 10th anniversary of the Wheaton Band Festival in mid-July.

Workday set at Hidden Lake

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County will hold its 10th annual "Random Acts of Kindness" workday at Hidden Lake Forest Preserve in Glen Ellyn from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 14.

Participants will help remove litter and trim trails. School groups, Scout troops, church groups and other organizations are invited to volunteer. The event is open to all ages, though children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Reservations are required to join the cleanup. Waivers are also required for all volunteers, and those under 18 must have a parent or guardian's signature. For information or to make a reservation, call Volunteer Services at 630-933-7681.

Resource center needs community help

The People's Resource Center expects to serve more than 2,800 families in November, and provide each one with a special Thanksgiving dinner. But to do so, it needs the community's help.

With every $15 donation, the PRC can offer a family a special choice of classic Thanksgiving "trimmings," their choice of familiar ethnic foods and a grocery gift card to purchase a turkey.

Free memory screenings in Wheaton

Free memory screenings will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 17 at Brighton Gardens of Wheaton, 831 E. Butterfield Road in Wheaton.

Volunteers get ready for Chore Days

The DuPage Senior Citizens Council will host its Chore Days program in November.

The program involves volunteers of all ages helping their senior neighbors with fall yard work. Last year, 155 senior citizens benefited from Chore Days.

"We are looking for volunteers of all types for outdoor fun while helping their senior neighbors with seasonal yard chores," said Patricia Sims, Chore Days coordinator. "Adults, teens, families, churches, schools, Scouts, businesses and civic and social clubs are all welcomed to participate in this event. The more volunteers we have the more seniors we can serve."

Chore Days will be held the first three weekends in November. Seniors in need of help or those who would like to volunteer should call 630-620-0804.

Downtown Wheaton Association launches Shoppers Club

As an addition to its new Web site, the Downtown Wheaton Association has launched an electronic Shoppers Club, which will keep subscribers informed about events in downtown Wheaton and will give members access to the inside scoop on sales and special promotions only available to club members.

The Shoppers Club is free to join.

Members can win free Downtown Wheaton gift certificates, receive restaurant discounts, find out advance notice on events and special offers and more.

Applicants sought for firefighter test

The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners is conducting a firefighter testing process to establish an interim rligibility list for full-time firefighter positions.

The examination for placement on the interim eligibility list is the written exam, and applicants will be ranked in the order of their scores.

Information and applications are available on the city's Web site at www.wheaton.il.us. Applications are due at Wheaton City Hall no later than 5 p.m. Dec. 16.
