STNG NEWS ALERTS ::
Students at Hill Middle School in Naperville, along with art education students from Northern Illinois University, work on the Tents of Hope project Friday.

Three weeks ago, most of Karen Popovich's Hill Middle School art students hadn't heard of Darfur. By Friday, they'd become so familiar with the crisis occurring there that a handful of them were willing to delay the start of their weekend and stay after school to work on Darfur's behalf. Their goal that afternoon was to finish painting a mural on an 8-by-10-foot tent to send to refugees.

Celebration of the horse, of course
"Mama, is it time?" Lauren Davis asked. The Lisle 6-year-old, like many of the numerous kids waiting Sunday outside the main arena at Danada Equestrian Center in Wheaton, was anxiously awaiting her chance to ride her hand-crafted hobbyhorse - which she named Cookie - around the ring. A short time later, the children were called inside the arena, and they happily galloped and giddyupped on their stick horses.
Early voting begins this week
Early voting for the Nov. 4 general election begins today for DuPage County residents and Tuesday for Will County residents. Early voting for both DuPage and Will county residents ends Oct. 30.

Bears: Kyle Orton sat in front of his locker and muttered "unbelievable." Other players simply hung their heads, not long after the Bears' sideline had been a scene of jubilation.

Engel: Kyle Orton had never looked and acted more confidently than the couple of minutes following his go-ahead touchdown pass to Rashied Davis with 11 seconds to play against Atlanta on Sunday. Who would have thought the biggest emotional swing in Chicago sports history since "The Bartman Game" was about to take place in Atlanta?

Fire: If the Fire hopes to make a push now that it finally has locked up a playoff berth, maybe a few more quiet talks with Brian McBride will do the trick. McBride burned his former club for two goals in a 2-2 draw Sunday against the Columbus Crew at Toyota Park.

Midwest shows true colors during fall
Let's face it: Jack Frost just isn't the most cuddly guy. Not many of us will say we eagerly await the arrival of winter's brutal gales. For most of us, warm, sunny days and cool nights sound just about right when fall rolls around. It turns out that's when the trees are suiting up for some of their best work.

Bill Murray talks, love, life and heartache
The deadpan and depressed characters Bill Murray has specialized in portraying as an actor in recent years have stood in contrast to the life-of-the-party guy he is in real life - whether on a golf course or shuttling people around downtown Stockholm in a golf cart, as he did last year.
