Phil Cullen, owner of Ballydoyle Irish Pub & Restaurant, is a man with an eye for décor and an environmentally friendly way to get the job done. Cullen has decided that, rather than buy up expensive decorative items for his pub room, he'd rather use pieces from old buildings. His environmental efforts were recently recognized on the Discovery Channel Network.

A glass-covered floor, hollowed-out window frames and cabinet doors barely hanging onto their hinges provided the scene Monday inside Salvation Army offices that were burglarized over the weekend in Elgin. Police were called to the organization's local headquarters Sunday morning after personnel arriving for church services discovered front doors leading to the building's gymnasium had been pried open.


Class 4A prep football state title: They were denied, but not in denial. Aurora Christian came up short in its bid to bring home the first state football title to the city of Aurora, but the Eagles teamed up with Bloomington Central Catholic to put on an entertaining display of offensive fireworks Friday before falling 37-28.

Class 5A prep football state championship: It wasn’t brain surgery, just football. But the efficient display by the St. Francis offense in slicing and dicing Metamora’s defense Saturday did the doctor proud. It powered a 49-35 victory that allowed the Spartans to win the IHSA Class 5A title, the school’s first in football. St. Francis had eight possessions in the game and scored touchdowns on seven of them. The only drive the Spartans didn’t cap with a score started with just 27 seconds remaining in the first half.

More Fed loans paint bleak picture of credit markets
The Federal Reserve boosted its lending to commercial banks and investment firms over the last week, indicating that a credit crisis was still squeezing the financial system. The Fed released a report Friday saying commercial banks averaged $93.6 billion in daily borrowing for the week ending Wednesday. That was up from an average of $91.6 billion for the week ending Nov. 19.
