Jessie Raven, 18, of Manhattan, applied for more than 40 jobs -- and even had some employers ask her to pay them a variety of fees -- before she got the retail job she starts next week at J.C. Penney.  (Liz Wilkinson Allen/Staff Photographer)
When Jessie Raven, 18, interviewed for a clerical job, she didn't expect a sales pitch. She also didn't expect to be asked to take out a $500 loan for job training and to buy fire extinguisher equipment. She would also have to pay $50 for a criminal background check. After three months of training, she would get paid $1,000. She tried to get out of the interview gracefully, but the interviewer was persistent.

Joliet dance company does 'Thriller' tribute
The annual dance recital for the Generation Dance Co. in Joliet was bittersweet for owner and director Roxiana Fuqua.
