Carmel High's baseball team tuned up for a big East Suburban Catholic Conference doubleheader on Saturday with a 9-3 non-league victory over visiting Zion-Benton on Thursday.
The Corsairs (25-5 overall) are currently tied for the top spot in the ESCC with Joliet Catholic at 15-3 with two conference games remaining at home on Saturday against Marist.
"We need to win two to earn a share of the conference title," said Carmel coach Chuck Gandolfi, who team tallied eight runs in the fourth inning to blow open Thursday's game.
Carmel warmed up its bats against the Zee-Bees behind the hitting of Brian Siedlecki (2 RBIs), Jordan Sivertsen (2 for 3, 2 RBIs), Donald Stopka (2 hits, RBI) and David Venegoni (double, 2 RBIs).
Joe Berg tossed four innings of one-hit ball to earn the pitching victory.
Baseball
Lake Zurich 3, Vernon Hills 0: Joey DeBernardis tossed a no-hitter to help the Bears (25-6) win their first-ever North Suburban Conference championship with Thursday's win in the title game. DeBernardis also struck out 8 and walked 3, while Reid Bergstrom led the way offensively with 2 hits, including a double.
Grayslake Central 11, Grayslake North 10: The battle of the Grayslake was won in eight innings on Wednesday by the Rams (17-12) when sophomore Mike Gentile doubled home Shawn Tobie in the bottom of the final frame. Central pounded out a season-high 19 hits, led by Matt Schmidt (2 doubles, 2 singles), Sean Seiler (3 hits) and Tobie (3 hits). The Rams' fourth pitcher of the game -- Kevin DeRue -- tossed the final two innings to improve to 5-1 on the season. Stephen Kalina (3 for 4, home run, 5 RBIs), Jim Butler (3 for 4, 2 RBIs) and Clay Hendricksen (2 for 5) led the way offensively for the Knights (9-16).
Lake Forest 8, Grant 4 : The Scouts (10-18) won Wednesday's non-division clash behind the hitting of Ryan Konsler, who belted a grand slam home run and a two-run homer to finish the day with six RBIs. Ian Hoagland (2 hits, 2 RBIs) also had a big game at the plate in support of winning pitcher Graham Wolff (6 IP, 2 ERs, 4 Ks, 5 Hs).
Mundelein 10, Evanston 0 : Eric Rohe improved his pitching record to 12-0, as he allowed just 4 hits with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks in the 5-inning non-conference win. Colton Tortorello (2 for 3, double), Jack Walliser (2 doubles) and Alex Ahonen (2 for 2, home run) were the hitting stars for the Mustangs (26-3).
Highland Park 11, Loyola 9 : The Giants (22-6) prevailed in eight innings, sparked by the bats of Johnny Lindquist (2 for 2, 2 RBIs), Anthony Kopp (3 for 5, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs), Jason Stein (2 for 5, 2 doubles), A.J. Nathan (4 for 5, double, RBI), Jimmy Risi (2 for 2, double) and Brian Evans (2 for 4). Kevin Sullivan (6-0) was the winning pitcher.
Softball
Waukegan 4, Niles North 0: The Bulldogs dominated on Senior Night at Dugdale Park behind the hitting of Praises Vega (2 for 2, 2 RBIs, triple), Lindsay Payne (2 for 3, RBI) and winning pitcher Stephanie Rieuwpassa (2 for 3, double), who also struck out 13 and allowed only 2 hits on the mound.
Lake Zurich 2, Vernon Hills 1: The Bears edged the Cougars in eight innings to claim the North Suburban Conference Championship Game. Winning pitcher Katie Buczynski (3 for 4, home run) drove in both runs for Lake Zurich (24-4), plus allowed just 3 hits with 10 strikeouts and 0 walks on the mound.
Boys volleyball
Lake Forest def. Vernon Hills: The Scouts handed the Cougars their first North Suburban Conference loss of the season on Wednesday 25-20, 25-17. Dave Siegel had 5 kills and Sam Lee dished out 10 assists to pace Vernon Hills (21-13 overall, 8-1 in the NSC).
Libertyville def. Carmel : The Wildcats (17-17) held off the Corsairs 26-24, 25-23 in the non-conference clash on Thursday, sparked by the play of J.J. Hill (7 kills), Matt Anderson (6 kills, 3 digs), Nick Olson (13 assists, 3 digs) and Matt Bernard (13 assists, 6 digs).
