VERNON HILLS – Warren High junior Denis Bogatov edged Stevenson High’s top-seeded Blake Bazarnik 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) in a thrilling championship match at No. 1 singles in the marque match of the weekend’s North Suburban Conference boys tennis tournament.

Bogatov’s gut-check win denied Stevenson of a clean sweep of the tourney, as the Patriots won at No. 1 singles, and swept all three divisions of doubles play.

In the team scoring, Stevenson won with 38 of a possible 40 points, followed by Warren (28) and Lake Forest (25).

Those were the only three schools in the 14-team field to advance anyone to the finals.

At Nos. 1 and 2 singles and No. 1 doubles, the top two seeds advanced to the finals, with the top seed prevailing at Nos. 2   singles (Stevenson’s Chris Speer) and No. 1 doubles (Stevenson’s David Packowitz-Ross Putterman).

Next up for all 14 teams is IHSA sectional competition next Friday and Saturday.

Libertyville, North Chicago, Mundelein and Wauconda have been assigned to the Deerfield Sectional; while Antioch, Grant, Warren, Lake Forest, Lakes, Round Lake and Zion-Benton will all play at Warren; and Lake Zurich, Stevenson and Vernon Hills will play at Stevenson.
