LAKE VILLA – Things looked rosy early on in the first football playoff home game in Lakes High history. The Eagles, playing before a packed house, led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter, capitalizing on two fumbles by the visiting Woodstock Blue Streaks.

But once Woodstock began securing the ball, it was all downhill for the home team as the Streaks, showing equal ability to pass and run, eliminated Lakes in this second–round Class 5A game 42-17.

Lakes scored twice late in the first quarter. The first score came when Lakes linebacker Wills Massie sacked Woodstock quarterback Logan Kunzie with a diving tackle. Kunzie’s fumble bounced high in the air and was grabbed by junior defensive lineman Brandon Mruk, who rambled 33 yards for the score. The extra point made it 7-0.

After the kickoff, the Blue Streaks fumbled again on their first play from scrimmage. Massie figured prominently once more in the Eagles early fortunes, recovering a botched handoff just 15 yards from pay dirt. Three plays later Andrew Tubek went in for the touchdown. The extra point made it 14-0 Lakes as the first quarter came to a close.

Lakes answered the first Woodstock touchdown, a 4-yard grab by Mike Kremske on a pass from Kunzie, with a 27-yard field goal by Mike Beckman. The 3-pointer came at the end of the longest march of the day by Lakes, an eight-play, 63-yard drive set up by an end zone-interception by John Werba of the home team.

Kunzie connected on a 54-yard score to Kremske late in the second quarter, but the Eagles still held a 17-14 lead at halftime.

The second half was all Woodstock, as the Blue Streaks scored two touchdowns in the third quarter and two more in the fourth while shutting down the Lakes attack.

Woodstock used the passing of Kunzie to set up its running attack. The Blue Streaks quarterback was 27 for 36 on the day for 311 yards passing that included three touchdown tosses. Seven different receivers caught passes for Woodstock, with Kremske grabbing seven balls for 127 yards and two scores.

Running back Mike Liedtke had just 11 carries on the day, but averaged over 10 yards per jaunt on the way to a 114-yard game that included touchdown runs of 36 and 17 yards.

Meanwhile, Andrew Tubek, who ended a sparkling season for Lakes with 1,321 yards rushing, had 100 yards on 18 carries.

The Eagles ended the season 6-5, while Woodstock, now 8-3, advances to meet Glenbard South in round three.
