LAKE FOREST – Unbeaten Cary-Grove improved to 11-0 on the season by overpowering Highland Park 48-28 here Saturday in the Round of 16 of the IHSA Class 6A football playoffs.

The game was played at Lake Forest High because that school has artificial turf, and Highland Park’s worn-out gridiron does not.

The Giants finished the season 7-4, losing to Cary-Grove (11-0), Maine South (11-0), Stevenson (10-1) and Warren (8-3).

Highland Park quarterback Walter Broder had a nice game, completing 8 of 20 passes for 261 yards and 3 TDs.

His scoring strikes were 79 and 54 yards to Jordan Reisner, and 37 yards to Matt Nieto. The Giants also scored on an 98-yard kickoff return by Cole Stern.

Cary-Grove was led by running back Alex Hambry who carried 22 times for 212 yards and scored on runs of 4, 33, 18 and 8 yards.

Cary was never in trouble, building a 32-14 third-quarter lead. The Trojans won the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division this year and will face Chicago DeLaSalle in the next round.
