GLEN ELLYN – Glenbard South scored the first 33 points of the game, then held on for a 33-27 victory over Vernon Hills here on Saturday in the Round of 16 in the IHSA Class 5A prep football playoffs.
The Cougars finished their season 8-3 while Glenbard South will face either Woodstock or Lakes in the quarterfinals next weekend.
Early mistakes doomed the visitors, who used an interception and fumble recovery to post two early scores. Three more touchdowns followed before Vernon Hills finally got going.
A one-yard TD run by DaVaris Daniels made it a 33-8 game at halftime, and Vernon Hills got second points on a 21-yard TD run by Evan Spencer, and two short TD runs by Daniels.
Daniels, only a junior, finished the game 11 of 20 passing for 152 yards. He also ran the ball 15 times for 66 yards and 3 TDs, and caught 3 passes for 42 yards.
