LIBERTYVILLE – Scoring touchdowns the first five times they touched the ball, the Vernon Hills Cougars enjoyed a Class 5A opening round football blowout with a 48-0 win over the Brooks Eagles of the Chicago Public League.
Six different Vernon Hills players scored on the day, as the Cougars (8-2) rushed to a 42-0 halftime lead and a merciful running clock for the visitors.
The Cougars were visitors somewhat themselves, playing on their sister school’s turf field at Libertyville High in order to escape muddy conditions at the Vernon Hills field.
Mohawk-wearing running back, junior Brian Palmer, led the way offensively for the Cougars with 104 yards rushing on 13 carries, including two touchdown runs that each traveled 18 yards.
Sophomore quarterback Steve Nelson threw a pair of touchdown passes, the first to junior DaVaris Daniels for 6 yards to start the day’s scoring and the other to Zach Kisley, a 27-yarder.
Others scoring for the Cougars were Evan Spencer (50-yard punt return), Nelson on a quarterback sneak and sophomore Grady Skeoch, who tallied on a 2-yard run and then kicked the extra point.
The Cougars played the entire second half with second and third stringers.
Brooks ends its season 6-4.
Vernon Hills will play Glenbard South in round two. Glenbard South bested Rochelle 35-14 on Saturday in an away game.
