While many people are comparing the malls in Gurnee and Schaumburg heading into Saturday's IHSA Class 8A second-round playoff football game between the host Saxons and visiting Warren at 5 p.m., there is one other similarity between the two squads.
Both teams have been beaten by the state's No. 1 team -- Maine South (10-0).
Schaumburg (6-4) lost to the Central Suburban League South Division champs 52-20 in its season opener, while the Blue Devils (9-1) were upended 35-21 in Week 2.
A potential rematch with Maine South remains a possibility for Saturday's winner in the semifinals. But first, Warren and Schaumburg must try to get to the quarterfinals for the first time in several seasons.
The Saxons downed another CSL South Division power, Glenbrook South, 20-16 in its playoff opener last weekend, as they came up big defensively on fourth downs -- stopping the Titans on five different occasions.
Sophomore running back Shepherd Little paced Schaumburg's offense in the victory, as he rushed for 124 yards on 29 carries and two scores.
Senior quarterback Anthony Iannotti also tossed for 104 yards and one TD.
Schaumburg finished its Mid-Suburban League West Division schedule with a disappointing 31-10 loss to league-champion Palatine in the final week of the regular season.
The Saxons could only manage a 2-3 record in the MSL West, but posted a trio of victories over Wheeling, Hersey and Prospect after the opening-week loss to Maine South.
Schaumburg has also allowed 300 points in 10 games, despite last weekend's stellar defensive performance against Glenbrook South.
