SATURDAY -- The Waukegan Bulldogs were eliminated from any possibility of being in the playoffs Saturday, losing their homecoming contest 44-20 to Central Suburban League South foe New Trier. The Trevians tallied two touchdowns from their defense and one from their kickoff team.
The Bulldogs are now 2-5 on the year, 0-2 in conference. New Trier is now 5-2, 3-0.
The game was competitive at 9-6, with the Trevians ahead, until half-way through the second quarter. Waukegan, stymied most of the game, scored on a 55-yard pass from Mar’Quezie Edmonds to Denzel Ray after New Trier had tallied the first 9 points of the game.
It all came apart when New Trier, behind a punishing offensive line, drove 81 yards on nine plays to score, then scored two plays later when an incomplete, lateral pass was scooped up and returned for a 22-yard touchdown less than a minute later. That made the score 23-6 at halftime.
The Trevians opened the second half returning the kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown, and for all practical purposes, the game was over.
Waukegan’s last two touchdowns came in the fourth quarter on a 45 yard pass from Edmonds to brother Mar’Quon, and a 4-yard score from Burke Morill to Quentin Stern.
Mar’Quezie Edmonds led the way passing with 191 yards on 8 of 17 passing, but was sacked six times with a -1 total for 15 rushes. His brother, Mar’Quon Edmonds, had 5 catches for 130 yards.
Spenser Gordon grounded out 137 yards on 14 carries for New Trier.
Waukegan plays Friday night at Niles West in another CSL South contest.
