ANTIOCH -- And then there were two ... and at this time next week, there will be just one.
Unbeaten area prep football teams that is.
Right now, there are a pair -- Antioch and Vernon Hills, which are both 6-0 overall.
Next Friday night, the two super-powers will square off in Vernon Hills in our area's Game of the Year.
That showdown was set up here Friday when Antioch celebrated Homecoming by knocking off previously unbeaten Grant 28-14. Vernon Hills, meanwhile, was hanging a 49-spot on winless Round Lake.
Antioch scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to break a 14-14 tie.
The first came on the first play of the final period when quarterback Matt Romani plunged in from a yard out for a 21-14 lead. This was a 10-play, 60-yard drive that answered a Grant scoring march that tied it.
Then, with 7:10 left to play, Antioch secured the win when star running back Cameron White hooked up with Davonte Miller for a 28-yard TD pass play on a halfback-option pass. That score came at the end of a six-play, 65-yard drive.
White, the area's top running back, carried 12 times in the game 130 yards and 1 TD.
Grant fullback Dan Hourihan carried 17 times for 71 yards and a second-quarter touchdown that tied the game briefly at 7-7. White's 10-yard TD run just before halftime made it 14-7 and a 21-yard TD pass from Justin Cokefair to older brother Jimi Cokefair tied it in the third period.
Justin Cokefair had a solid game. He completed 8 of 15 passes for 125 yards and a score, and had three balls dropped -- including one that could have resulted in a TD late in the first half.
Next week, Grant will celebrate its Homecoming with a Saturday game against dangerous Wauconda. Antioch 28, Grant 14
