PREP BOYS SOCCER: IHSA CLASS AA LIBERTYVILLE SECTIONAL COMPLEX

Carmel inches closer to rematch with Mundelein

May 18, 2008

GURNEE — The one game this season that everybody associated with Carmel High’s girls soccer team remembers is the “1” in the team’s 18-1 record.

That was the night the Corsairs were stunned by Mundelein 1-0 on the Mustangs’ sloppy pitch in the game that earned Mundelein the No. 1 seed in the IHSA Class AA Libertyville Sectional Complex and left Carmel as the No. 2.

Since then, the Corsairs have put together a 15-game winning streak and are now within one win of getting the rematch with Mundelein that they’ve been waiting for since that fateful night on the rain-soaked, muddy pitch at MHS.

But first, Carmel must beat Libertyville in what certainly has to be considered a danger game for the Corsairs on Tuesday night. Libertyville is the No. 3 seed in the sectional and is moving closer to regaining its status as this area’s top prep program.

Also on Tuesday, Mundelein will face unheralded McHenry, a double-digit seed that seized the moment when lowly Richmond stunned No. 4 seed Antioch in regional play. McHenry then beat Richmond to earn Tuesday’s spot opposite Mundelein.

If form holds on Tuesday, Mundelein and Carmel will meet on Libertyville’s artificial turf Thursday night for the sectional title.

Carmel won its regional title on Saturday, edged pesky Warren 3-2 in Gurnee.

Senior Kiersten Trillhaase scored in the 69th minute to break a 2-2 tie.

Sara Petermann and Kassidy Brown scored first-half goals for Carmel, and Kelsey Armour and Megan Kilroy dented the net in the first 40 minutes for Warren.
