Nathan knocks in 8 for Giants in CSL North-clinching win

May 15, 2008

A big day at the plate for A.J. Nathan sparked Highland Park High's baseball team in their Central Suburban League North Division finale on Wednesday.

Nathan went 3 for 3 with a pair of home runs -- including a grand slam -- plus drove in eight runs in the Giants' CSL North Division championship clinching victory over rival Deerfield 13-4.

Winning pitcher Jon Menke , who scattered 7 hits with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks in the complete-game outing, also helped his own cause with 2 hits at the plate, while Anthony Kopp (2 for 4, 2 RBIs) also hit the ball well.

Baseball

Libertyville 6, Maine South 4: The Wildcats improved to 21-11 behind the hitting of Tim Matheson (3 for 3, double, triple, 2 RBIs), Tom Jacobson (3 for 4, 2 doubles), Joe Aiello (double) and Mason Reiff (double), while Troy Barton (5-2) earned the pitching win with 6 solid innings of work.

Stevenson 2, Wauconda 0 : The Patriots used a solid pitching performance from Matt Rubin in the victory, as he allowed just 3 hits with 11 strikeouts in the complete-game win. Walter Wiener knocked in both runs with a pair of hits.

Antioch 9, Zion-Benton 6: Ken Karagiorgas led the way for the Sequoits at the plate (2 for 4, triple) and on the mound (6 IP, 3 Hs, 9 Ks) in the non-division win. Andy Danna (2 for 4, triple, home run), Logan Kent (home run) and Max Quinnett (2 for 3, 2 RBIs) also provided an offensive spark for the winners.

Mundelein 17, Round Lake 0: The Mustangs upped their record to 25-3 behind the hitting of Dillon Smith (home run), Jay Mueller (2 doubles) and Colton Tortorello (double, triple).

Softball

Lake Forest 1, Grant 0: The Scouts (16-13) used a one-hit pitching performance from Lauren LaDuke to edge the Bulldogs in Wednesday's non-division game. The lone run was scored in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jean Rebarchek doubled and eventually scored on Kristie Borrasso's two-out hit.

Johnsburg 7, Grayslake North 5 : The Knights (10-17) dropped a FVC Fox contest in 10 innings on Wednesday despite solid hitting from Amanda Leon (2 for 5) and Jamie Breitweiser (double).

Libertyville 3, Lakes 2 : A two-run single by Leanne Kaczmar was huge for the Wildcats in the non-division win. Toni Kintzel also contributed two hits, including a solo home run for the game-winner in the bottom of the fifth. Kat Bernard (double) and winning pitcher Danielle Kaczmar (2 hits) also came through at the plate.

Antioch 13, Zion-Benton 2 : The Sequoits dominated behind the hitting of Allie Antilla (3 for 4, double) and Samie Seamon (2 for 4, double), while Ashley Mysliwiec (6 IP) and Olivia Dewhr (1 IP) shared the winning pitching duties.

Vernon Hills 8, Lake Zurich 7 : In a preview of today's NSC Championship Game, the Cougars prevailed in nine innings on Wednesday as both teams didn't use the No. 1 pitchers.
