Borders strikes out 12 for Knights in softball win over rival Rams
Grayslake North High pitcher Carly Borders struck out 12 in five innings in helping the Knights upend Fox Valley Conference rival Grayslake Central 16-3 Monday.
Leaders at the plate for Grayslake North (9-15 overall, 5-7 in the FVC Fox) includes Jamie Breitweiser (home run), Amanda Leon (3 for 3), Mindy Runge (3 for 3, double), Sam Fletcher (double) and Borders (triple).
Softball
Libertyville 4, Round Lake 0: Kat Bernard (5 Ks) and Danielle Kaczmar (4 Ks) shared the winning shutout pitching duties for the Wildcats, while Katie Larson (2 hits), Leanne Kaczmar (2 hits, 2 runs), Amanda Pecucci (2 RBIs) and Julie Gulkison (2 RBIs) led the way at the plate.
Lake Zurich 3, Wauconda 2 : A home run and a double by Coryn Schmit lifted the Bears past the Bulldogs in a non-division game on Monday. Katie Buczynski allowed just 4 hits with 9 strikeouts on the mound.
Lake Forest 4, Vernon Hills 3: The Scouts (14-13) were led offensively by Kristie Borrasso (3 for 4, double, 2 RBIs), Monica Grilli (2 for 4, RBI) and winning pitcher Lauren LaDuke (2 for 4, RBI). Adriana Longobardi (double, 2 RBIs) led the way for the Cougars (26-5), who lost for the first time this season against NSC competition.
Antioch 6, Stevenson 4 : The Sequoits (21-11) rallied with six runs in the final two frames to pull out Monday's non-division win. Ashley Mysliwiec (3 for 3, home run) and Melisa Ori (double) were the hitting stars for Antioch.
Carmel 2, FEnwick 1 : The Corsairs edged their ESCC foe on Monday behind solid pitching from Courtney Ryan (7 IP, 2 Hs).
BASEBALL
Glenbrook S. 6, Waukegan 3: The Bulldogs blew a 3-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning when the Titans scored five times to pull out the victory. Jonathan French led the way offensive for Waukegan with a trio of hits.
Mundelein 9, Grant 1 : The Mustangs upped their record to 23-3 behind the hitting of Dillon Smith (2 for 3, triple) and Kevin Barber (2 for 3, double). Justin Piasecki tossed 6 innings for the pitching win.
Lake Zurich 3, Wauconda 0 : Brock Simon improved to 4-0 on the mound for the Bears (23-6), as he hurled 6.1 innings of 4-hit ball before giving way to Joey DeBernardis for the save. DeBernardis (2 for 3) also belted his 12th home run of the season, a 2-run shot in the bottom of the third.
Warren 11, Lakes 4 : The Blue Devils (15-12) pounded out 15 hits in the non-division win -- led by Ryan Economos (3 for 4), Ryan Pyle (2 for 4, 4 RBIs), Tony Roberts (2 for 4, 2 RBIs), Chad Johnson (2 for 4, 2 RBIs) and Aaron Dahlke (3 for 3, RBI). Sean Kennedy upped his pitching record to 5-4 with 5 solid innings of work.
Zion-Benton 20, North Chicago 3 : The Zee-Bees improved to 4-22 on the season.
Deerfield 1, Highland Park 0 : The Warriors edged the Giants to prevent the Highland Park from celebrating its CSL North Division title a few more days, as Alex Parmacek's RBI double in the second inning was all the scoring winning pitcher Sam Dickstein (7 IP, 6 Hs, 4 Ks) would need. Garrett Gordon was the tough-luck losing pitcher for Highland Park.
Vernon Hills 8, Lake Forest 5 : In his first varsity start, sophomore Scott Kempell earned the pitching victory for the Cougars with relief help from John Rathod and Jamie Manhard. He also helped his own cause with 2 hits and 2 RBIs.
Stevenson 5, Antioch 4 : The Patriots prevailed in the bottom of the seventh when Matt Goll (2 for 4) knocked in the game-winning run. Scott Firth when the distance on the mound, allowing just 5 hits with 8 strikeouts.
Boys Tennis
Grant 4, Johnsburg 1: The Bulldogs were led by straight-set wins in singles from Alex Marginean and Clay Guenther .
