Vernon Hills captures own boys volleyball invitational

VERNON HILLS – The Vernon Hills Cougars boys volleyball team captured their own eight-team Cougar Classic invitational tournament Saturday. It was the third win in a row the team won its own tourney, which began in 2001.

Vernon Hills went 4-1 on the day, losing a pool play game to Glenbard West, but beating Elgin Larkin, Montini and  Highland Park to advance to the championship match, where it then avenged its one loss by beating Glenbard West. The score of the championship match was 25-22, 20-25, 25-14.

Highland Park took fourth place in the tourney.

Other teams included Oswego (third place), St. Viator (fifth place), Hinsdale South (sixth place), Montini (seventh place) and Larkin (last).

During the tournament, Vernon Hills Libero Jeff Achler set the school record for career digs. He had 73 digs in the tournament. Ernie Choi led the team with 35 kills on the day, with Keegan Harris and Herman Lynn adding 27 kills each.

The Cougars are now 21-12 on the season.
