Mundelein and Lake Zurich split baseball doubleheader

April 20, 2008
LAKE ZURICH -- In a showdown doubleheader on Saturday, two of the area’s best baseball teams, the Mundelein Mustangs and Lake Zurich Bears, split a North Suburban Conference Lake Division doubleheader.

Mundelein won the first-game nail-biter as workhorse Eric Rohe outdueled the Bears’ Joey DeBernardis 2-1. Each pitcher fanned seven in the game, but errors did in Lake Zurich. DeBernardis (3-2) allowed just three hits no earned runs and accounted for his team’s only run with a solo homer in the third inning.

Rohe yielded just five hits and improved his record to 6-0.

In the second game, Lake Zurich led 3-0 then broke open the contest with a four-run fourth and a seven-run fifth before the game was stopped.

Brock Simon went the distance for Lake Zurich, fanning seven. He is 2-1 on the year.

Five Bears had multi-hit games, with DeBernardis, perhaps the best hitter in Lake County, again homering in a 2 for 2 effort that also included 3 RBIs, 3 runs and 2 walks. Steve Cleary had 3 hits and 4 RBIs while Reid Bergstrom had 3 hits and 3 ribbies.

The loss by Mundelein is only the Mustangs’ second of the year against 14 wins. They are 3-1 in conference.

Lake Zurich is now 10-4 and 4-1 in conference.
