PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: LAKES 76, GRANT 64

Williams scores 37 as Eagles soar on road

December 9, 2007

FOX LAKE — Stepping up when an injured sidelined Lakes’ leading scorer, the aptly named Trey Williams knocked down five 3-pointers and scored 37 points Saturday to lead Lakes to a 76-64 win over Grant in a North Suburban Prairie Division boys basketball game.

Facing one of the area better teams Lakes (3-4 overall, 1-1 in division play) was carried by the senior guard, who hit nearly everything he put up in the first quarter, when Lakes built a lead it never relinquished.

“I was hyped up,” said Williams. “We had to pick up the slack (with Guirand out). After those first two 3’s in the first quarter, I was confident after that.”

Williams outdueled his counterpart, Grant guard Mike Shields, who, although he led the Bulldogs with 21 points, had an off night shooting, hitting just four field goals.

Lakes coach Brian Phelan credited the defensive effort of sophomore guard John Androus with containing Shields, but, he added, “everybody contributed tonight on defense. I was very pleased.”

Grant stayed within striking distance throughout, even cutting Lakes’ lead to eight midway through the fourth.

But then it was Williams who delivered. When Grant cut the lead to 58-50, Williams answered with two more treys to clinch the win for Lakes, which plays Round Lake next Friday.

“When you have adversity, that’s when the character shines through,” Phelan said. “I’m really impressed with the kids and how they responded.”
