Grayslake North graduate sets fast pace at CLC

November 3, 2009

Grayslake North High graduate Nick Lane came up huge for the College of Lake County in Saturday's NJCAA Region IV (northern half of Illinois) men's cross-country meet at Waubonsee Community College.

Waubonsee was favored to have its runners finish 1-2-3-4-5 in the race, but Lane made sure that didn't happen with a solid, fifth-place finish.

No runner from any Region 4 school had beaten a Waubonsee top-five runner all season until Lane's race.

"We knew that we had two runners capable of cracking Waubonsee's top five and no one else could touch them, " said CLC coach Steve Blomgren. "As good as their top five have been since the start of the season, they have not improved much. Nick and Spenser Simon have been making steady progress and they continue to get stronger week-to-week. I think the poor course condition and wind bothered Spenser and he had an off-day. Otherwise, he could have cracked that top five, too."

Lane and Simon will now compete in the NJCAA national meet on Nov. 14 at The Newman Golf Course in Peoria. Joining them will be CLC runners Jorge Colin and Eric Zeddies.
