Making the best of Turkey Day dinner disasters

The turkey�s still frozen solid. The gravy comes out lumpy. The guests arrive before the food is finished. Big holiday dinners can be tough to orchestrate. Don't worry. Most kitchen failures can be fixed with a little ingenuity and flexibility. If the buttered carrots morph into carrot soup or the cake becomes �pudding� at the last minute, no one needs to know that isn�t what you�d planned all along. The most important thing is to keep your cool.

Immigration center named for Father Gary

About five years ago, Father Gary Graf, the Catholic priest and former pastor of Most Blessed Trinity Parish in Waukegan and North Chicago helped found an immigration center in a former Catholic school building at on 10th Street in Waukegan. On Friday it was named in his honor.

Dairyland track denies euthanasia rumor

There is no truth to the rumor that dogs may be euthanized after Dairyland Greyhound Park in Kenosha closes Dec. 31. Chicago resident Joanne Kehoe, who owns two greyhounds, said she e-mailed a link to fellow dog lovers that gave out the Dairyland Race Track Adoption Center's phone number. "I never said that these dogs might be euthanized ..."

Learning to be thankful

Dressed as pilgrims and Native Americans, 3-year-olds in the Camp Crayon preschool sat together, shared a feast of popcorn, pie and pudding and explored the reasons for the first Thanksgiving. On Wednesday, the preschoolers sat at a long table and enjoyed the foods they prepared.
