Moon-struck Grayslake teen wins trip to Space Camp

When Matthew Rasmussen's parents took him downtown to the Adler Planetarium one afternoon in May, you can imagine his surprise when he discovered the trip was actually to announce him as the winner of ComEd's Shoot for the Moon essay contest. Rasmussen, 14, of Grayslake, was selected out of 450 entries to win the grand prize: a trip to Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala.

The earwigs are here in force this year. Earwigs are dark reddish brown insects, about five-eights of an inch long. The earwig's body is narrow, with short wing covers and a pronounced pair of "pincers" on the tip of the abdomen. The pincers are used to fold and unfold the wings and to catch small insects. Earwigs can fly, but seldom do. Immature earwigs look very much like the adults, but are smaller.

After a company trip to Africa, Scott Hayward was so moved by the plight of needy orphans that he started his own charity, Oasis for Orphans. The organization built an orphanage for 65 Kenyan children. Oasis is working with The Chapel, a church with five locations around Lake County, and Trans Mara Development (TMD), a Kenyan organization working with needy individuals in the Trans Mara region of Kenya.

They met in Tikrit on July 9. "It was really joyful to us because we've talked around the dinner table how nice it would be if they could meet up over there," said their father, Paul Hettich, who lives with his wife, Mary Ann, in Antioch. "It was something special."

'Inmate to Workmate' program helps ex-cons land food, retail jobs

Inmates at the county jail are about to get a little more marketable. A new job program set to launch next week at the Lake County Jail will allow a segment of inmates to earn certificates for food and retail services. The "Inmate to Workmate" program, which is sponsored by Aramark, allows non-violent inmates to participate in classes and that could help them land jobs upon their release.
