Enjoying Waukegan's theater district

June 29, 2009

There were four movie theaters in town on Genesee Street. The north end had the Genesee Theatre (real snazzy) and the Academy and on the south end was the Rialto and the Times Theatre, all four across the street from each other.

Before being incorporated, Waukegan was called Little Fort for the Indians who settled there.

I believe in the 1930s the Times Theatre ran a special on Saturdays. It was called Buddy Day. My sister Myrt and I could get in for 15 cents.

They ran the old westerns of Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. We spent the whole day eating popcorn and drinking sodas. We always had a good time.

Around suppertime we decided we'd better go home. We took the transit bus home and we rode the bus into town also.

My nickname is Min - that's what everone calls me from the church and the Senior Center.
