Watching movies in balcony of the Genesee

April 27, 2009

I was born at St. Therese Hospital in 1975, and had my first daughter there in 1997. St. Therese is no longer called that, but called Vista West instead, and no longer has an obstetrics department.

I remember seeing "Star Wars" and "The Muppet Movie" at Genesee Theatre. We sat in the balcony. I thought the snack counter was beautiful. Candy sold by the pound was on display in clear cases -- a rainbow of gummy bears, M&M's, etc.

"At the Movies" with Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert was filmed at Genessee Theatre then, and aired on PBS Channel 11. My brother and I would watch the show every week and say, "We watch movies there too, just like Siskel and Ebert!" We answered every question thumbs up or thumbs down, not yes or no.

Grandma bought cases of bottled soda at Glen Rock. I would have fun listening to the "pop" my thumb made going in and out of the bottles we took back for deposit. I would do that the whole ride there until my thumb got stuck, and Grandma would help me get my thumb unstuck. I would repeat the popping every week we took the ride to Glen Rock soda with the empty bottles.
