TALK OF THE COUNTY
November 6, 2009
Voters voted
Supervisor Suzanne Simpson did not single-handedly decide that Warren Township would buy land for sports fields, which is not, by the way, a "sports complex." The voters of Warren Township voted to purchase the land -- by more than 100 votes -- at a town hall meeting.
Kyle's flip-flop
Here's another reason not to believe what politicians say: On Oct. 30, Angelo Kyle said he would not oppose state Rep. Eddie Washington in the Democratic primary election. On Nov. 2, Kyle filed petitions to oppose Washington in the primary. Beware!
Past administrations
Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi write a bill behind closed doors without participation from the Republican Party. Then they turn around and call the Republican Party obstructionists because they won't agree with it. Doesn't that sound like the previous criticisms of past administrations? I thought Obama promised change. All we have is more of the same.
The giving kind
On Halloween or any other holiday you are not obligated to participate. But if you are the kind of person that enjoys giving, then by all means please do.
Minority vaccinations
Recently, the county distributed the H1N1 shots. The health department gave 2,500 allocations to Waukegan, Gurnee and Round Lake. They only gave 250 to North Chicago. Why so few for a minority community? I can only come to one conclusion: This is the vaccine manufacturers' and Bush's fault, not Obama's.
Cry like a baby
It's a strange world we live in if Southwest Airlines goes back to the gate and lets off a mother and her 2-year-old because of a 2-year-old tantrum. But other airlines leave passengers stranded on the tarmac for six hours and they won't go to the gate to let them off. Next time I'm ever stranded on a plane, I'm going to cry like a 2-year-old.
Show of politics
I'm not a Democrat or a Republican. Frankly, I don't know who to vote for anymore. Now our president takes time to stump for some candidate in New York. This is ridiculous, expensive and an unbelievable show of politics in this country. Our leaders need to lead, not showboat. I am sick of what has happened to this country. What happened to my America? Call your senators and representatives. Bring them down to earth and tell them to start working for hardworking Americans.
Trick-or-treating
What happened to the old days for trick or treating when children actually came trick or treating in costumes? Now you get children that are just coming to the door wanting candy without costumes. It defeats what we believe is true trick or treating.Wonderful party
I want to thank Lake Villa Township for the senior Halloween party on Oct. 29. It was a wonderful party.
I noticed when you report small people that do small crimes they are front page news. But when someone steals $40 million from Best Buy and you put the story on page 23 and no pictures. These are people scamming people out of their jobs. I want to see and know who these people are. Let's get some names and pictures on the front page for these folks. We need a white-collar crime page.White-collar crime
Pre-school
I'm calling about the article titled "Shut out of early learning" on Nov. 2. I agree with the quote that children who do not get a pre-school education are likely to create more expenses for the school district. Both my sons went to pre-school, but the difference is that I had to pay for it. Is this another free handout for all our illegal aliens? I see they have an interpreter in one of the pictures. Explain this one.
Trick, treat hours
I was happy for the hours we had for trick or treating in Beach Park. The complainers should see that in the city of Chicago anyone can go trick or treating from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. So I think the 4 to 8 p.m. time is more than reasonable. I hope they keep it for next year.
Serious flu
On Oct. 30 I woke up with a strong case of the flu. Most of the flu that is out now is the swine flu. The flu is serious and people should stay home and be careful not to infect others.
H1N1 vaccine
I agree the illegal immigrants should get the H1N1 vaccine, but only after the legal citizens get it.
Thoroughly briefed
George W. Bush had so much to complain about from the Clinton administration. He inherited peace, prosperity, the first budget surplus in over 30 years and the finest military in the history of this planet. The Bush administration was thoroughly briefed on the threat of al- Qaida, but they did nothing about it until after Sept. 11.
Wadsworth safety
Winthrop Harbor's service of nine years in Wadsworth was needed for our safety and well being. They were there for all of us. It was and is in the best interest of the residents to show a presence and to protect us from thieves, speeders going 70 to 80 mph in residential speed zones, drunk drivers, and passing school buses picking up children at stop signs, along with pulling people from vehicles involved in an accident. Don't be fooled into thinking it was to save money. It is also great to see that two trustees stood up for the residents of Wadsworth and aren't puppets for Glenn Ryback, the village president, and his hidden agendas.
Strings attached
We all knew that when the federal government doled out money there were always strings attached. Just look at GM. After the deal had been struck, now they are coming up with new rules. Justifying it because they've been given federal money. When health care is being paid for by the federal government do you think there won't be strings attached? Do you think they won't control what you do because it affects your health?
In the floodplain
This is to the person that said the H1N1 delay isn't anyone's fault. They've been delayed due to manufacturing issues. Are they sure Obama didn't inherit the problem from Bush, like all the other problems? That's from a right-wing nut.Manufacturing issues
He understands
I finally understand modern American capitalism. If you are not making an obscene profit out of something, then it must be socialism!
Warren sports fields
Perhaps the person who thinks Warren Township residents will now be paying for the sports fields with tax dollars should have actually attended the meeting and heard the facts. Taxes will not be used for these sports fields. Perhaps that's why almost 300 voters voted "yes" to purchase the land. And by the way, the Gurnee Park District is a totally separate entity from Warren Township. Take the time to know the facts before ranting on subjects you are not informed about. Did the person complaining about this purchase even bother to go to the town hall meeting or vote?
