TALK OF THE COUNTY

November 5, 2009

The lucky ones

I spent a couple hours in the rain Oct. 29 at the Health Department offices on 14th Street and Lewis Avenue in North Chicago. I was one of the lucky ones to get the H1N1 vaccine. The majority of the people there were Hispanic. There were very few black or white people in those lines. Why?

Happy Halloween

I would like to extend our thanks to the Winthrop Harbor Recreation Department and people who helped make another great Halloween party for our youngsters. Everyone had a great time, it was well organized and, more importantly, our kids enjoyed it. The Harbor is a great place to live!

Disappointed in Gurnee

I have lived in Gurnee 28 years and this was the worst Halloween trick or treat I have seen. Can't decide if the extended hours, the increase in candy prices or the fact that the economy has affected so many people that they can't buy candy are the reasons for this year. People weren't home or didn't answer their door. Others had signs that they weren't giving out candy. Very disappointing for the children, I'm sure.

MSNBC attacks

This is about Fox News attacks on Obama: What planet is the person living on that said they never heard President Bush attacked like that by any news organization? Haven't they ever heard of MSNBC, Chris Matthews and the like?

Legals first

A person said that the illegal citizens should get the H1N1 vaccine. That's fine after the legal citizens of the U.S. get their vaccine. I have insurance and am having a hard time finding the vaccine.

Road open!

On my way to work Nov. 2, I went down Greenleaf to Washington in Gurnee expecting the usual road construction mess. It was wide open! And even Greenleaf heading in to Park City was a smooth trip as well! Well, I guess after two-plus years it would eventually get finished. Now about Route 41...

So how is that change you can believe in working out for you? Unemployment is still going up. People are still losing their houses. Soldiers are dying while Obama contemplates his decision. The economy is on the rise, but only because the government is spending money they don't have. You asked for change a year ago, and boy did we get it.

Prayer vigil

There was a prayer vigil Oct. 30 on Argonne Drive, Broadway and Park Avenue in North Chicago. In attendance was the mayor, clergymen and police officers. It was really nice to see. It was the first time in many years I was able to walk one block from my house after dark. It was nice to see all the support from our city. Thank you to all of you that attended.

Get on the bus

This is to "Unfair business": You obviously don't ride in taxi cabs that often. Don't bother riding in a taxi cab during the winter months. Stand out in that cold and wait for a bus.

Burning leaves

Once again we find the communities that just don't get it. Inhaling smoke from burning leaves is not good for anyone, especially children that have allergies or asthma. Unless you've experienced it, you have no idea what it does or the harm you are causing. Please don't say: "Stay inside." People need to go outside. Mayors and trustees, be responsible, not irresponsible, on this subject.

Free speech

Fox News is telling it like it is! I believe someone needs to bring up the dirt on the Obama team! Only 26 percent of Americans agree with the direction Obama is going. The president should stop this hate of Fox News. Free speech is the law!

TV Prevue

I would like to see The News-Sun eliminate the six-page spread for the TV Prevue in the weekend edition. I don't think anyone would notice it gone. It would be a good way to eliminate waste, reduce cost and help protect the environment. Anyone can search the Internet or watch the TV Guide channel to get the TV show that they want. They don't need a printed copy.

H1N1 shots

Regarding the H1N1 shots: No one is saying that illegals should not get the shot, but the American citizens should get it first, especially those with underlying illnesses.

Photo op

Obama showed up at Dover Airforce Base to view the war heroes who came back dead from Afghanistan and I noticed that he brought the press with him. Bush did the same thing, but he didn't use it as a photo opportunity, and nobody really knew about it. Apparently, of the 18 families of the dead soldiers there was only one that was willing to talk to him. I don't trust a thing that Obama and the entire government does at this point. No wonder we are still in a deep recession.

Wilt away

Four of my friends and myself stood in line for 2½ hours to get the H1N1 vaccines, and when we got up there, because of our ages, there was no vaccine for us. That's unfair. Obama feels we must wilt away and die. I hope he can live with his decision.

Little ingrates

After dealing with the trick or treaters in my Zion neighborhood on Saturday, I wish to convey my condolences to all teachers and employees in our school system. Whatever they get paid to deal with these little ingrates on a daily basis is not enough. I cannot imagine what course work a teacher could take to prepare themselves for this new generation of ungrateful and rude panhandlers. I suspect they will want twice the amount of handouts that their parents are receiving.
