TALK OF THE COUNTY

October 30, 2009

Political football

The people showing up and blaming the Gurnee Village Board for the state of the Heroes Memorial are either uninformed or trying to turn this into some sort of political football. As a village resident, I think we all would have been better served by using the funds to maintain the already established and nicely done war memorial at Washington Street and O'Plaine Road. I think those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for this great country should be memorialized equally.

A myth

Anyone who believes death panels will come to fruition needs help badly. It's a myth!

The only progress

This is a belated response to the person that thanked the cities of Waukegan and North Chicago for repaving Green Bay Road. I believe Green Bay Road is a state-maintained roadway and that neither city had anything to do with it. I can't speak for Waukegan, but in North Chicago the only progress seen in the last five years is higher property taxes, five sections of concrete sidewalk repaired on Argonne Drive and less services provided to the taxpayers. And the train horns blowing day and night sometimes sounds like a contest. It almost seems they want everyone to move out to make their jobs easier. The next comment will be about the school board.

The blame goes round

So Obama blames Bush. Big deal. Bush blamed Clinton, Reagan blamed Carter, Nixon blamed Johnson, etc. It is about time that we get someone in the White House who does the job they were elected to do without worrying about their popularity or legacy. Hopefully, the next president will man up (or woman up) and do the right thing, not the popular thing. If the presidents do not like rebuke or criticism, then why did they all marry?

Bailout precedent

Common sense dictates that President Obama's bailout program is never a good idea. Here's why: Business executives and leaders lose their incentive to do good because they can rely on the government to bail them out if they do not succeed. Worse, the government will have to bail out all businesses that are in trouble because it created a precedence.

Controlling

Democrats feel this need to "take control" of Lake County government. Is that what we want? Lake County to be controlled by the same people who facilitated, then protected Blago, and who have tripled our national debt over the last nine months? Lake County is one of the last places in northern Illinois for people to live and work without the corruption that permeates most of this state.

No vaccine for you!

Obamacare has no plans to unplug gramma. However, no H1N1 vaccine for you even though you are old, frail and suffer from underlying conditions. Medication and treatments won't be denied, either. Yea, right!

Party affiliation

Terry Link describes the new candidate for county sheriff as "a real Democrat." Does that mean that he'll have countless petition violations and he'll be a lap dog to Link if he wins? I'll take Mark Curran any day, regardless of party affiliation.

Journey to the center

After viewing all the horrific pictures of faces, skulls and creatures portrayed in Halloween celebrations, it seems that people are taking to it like hot buttered popcorn and can't get enough of it. Has anyone thought of drilling a hole to the center of the earth in search of the real thing?

Senior rides

I'm not a rich or a poor senior and I can afford a train ride. Free rides should be given to people who have a low income and can't afford to ride the bus. There are people out there that are really hurting. I think the seniors get enough discounts around the county and I think the ones that can afford it should give back a little.

So simple

It is becoming clear that the Obama administration is playing politics in conducting the war in Afghanistan. With the Democratic problems in the coming elections for governorships in New Jersey and Virginia, Obama is playing it safe. Not to negatively affect the elections in case he makes the wrong move. It is that simple.

Flu vaccine

I read the person's comment about President Obama being somehow less responsible than President Bush for the actions of the Food and Drug Administration in getting flu vaccines out to the public. President Bush's FDA, in 2004, didn't have H1N1 vaccines to produce in addition to the normal, seasonal flu vaccine. I say good job to the vaccine makers, the FDA and the CDC for getting a vaccine created and production beginning in less than six months. President Bush's FDA couldn't get regular old seasonal flu vaccine out to public with only that to worry about!

Afghan war

How ridiculous that our president is on the David Letterman show while he should be taking the time to think about this Afghanistan war. I have family over there, a young lady with two children. She says they have bulky equipment and need the help. The president is very wrong in not putting this war as his first priority. General McCrystal is there for a reason and was put in that position for a reason. So why is the president avoiding what has been suggested to him?

Stay out

It's silly when people give candy out to adults or kids that aren't in costume on Halloween. I ask them if they didn't do this as a kid? They're grown ups and trying to get candy. I just tell them to get out of here.

Voting fools

Campaign reform coming out of Springfield is a perfect example of how career politicians have been able to fool most voters for so long. They pass a bill that basically does nothing, but then gives incumbents talking points for the election. Congress has an approval rating of below 15 percent, yet 95 percent of incumbents get re-elected. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Vote these people out!

Assistants

The village of Antioch has a mayor and he has an administrator. That administrator has an assistant, the village clerk, and she has an assistant. Now the Community Development director wants an assistant. Can't these people do their own jobs? How many other villages have all these assistants? I remember when there were only three people in the village office now there are close to 30.

Deer meat

Regarding "Bang, bang" about shotgun blasts and sportsmen killing wildlife for the thrill to kill. My husband is a hunter. He shoots one or two deer a season. We butcher it ourselves. The only time I buy any beef is for a steak now and then for him. Our venison isn't pumped full of chemicals that are used to get all kinds of meat to market as soon as possible. If this person eats any kind of meat, guess what? It had to be killed.

Unity for all

I think the way to bring unity into this country is to stop celebrating separate ethnicity or heritage days. They should have one heritage day, regardless of what ethnicity, and celebrate it on that day without further celebration. Especially now when we need unity more than ever. All can participate with food, marches or whatever.
