Beach Park renames road

November 13, 2009

BEACH PARK -- Renaming West Adams Road was long overdue. Now it's West Major Avenue.

The Village Board approved the change Tuesday night, unfinished business from annexing West Adams from Wadsworth more than six years ago.

Village administrator Ken Lopez said the annexation coincided with building Cambridge subdivision around 2003.

The ordinance changes the portion of Adams in Beach Park to Major from Paris Drive east to Bayonne Avenue. The public works department will change all street signs accordingly.

The only property affected by the name change is the site of the new Beach Park Fire Protection District fire house/substation, said Trustee Mark Ottersen. A two-story house and garage will be expanded for service vehicles and firefighters.

Ottersen said it was a simple oversight that the changes were not made sooner.

"It's the same road, but in the Wadsworth boundaries it's called Adams, and in Beach Park it's Major from now on," Ottersen said. "It will be Major from Paris all the way to Green Bay Road."

The formal name change will be submitted to Lake County to update the GIS map, and to the Illinois Department of Transportation and the U.S. Postal Service.
