'Person of interest' in fatal North Chicago hit-and-run

November 4, 2009

NORTH CHICAGO -- Police are speaking to a person of interest in connection with a Kemble Avenue hit-and-run accident that led to the death of a 24-year-old man Monday evening.

Charges could be filed today, police said.

Ernesto Ortiz, 24, of the 2000 block of Kemble Avenue, was hit by a maroon Hyundai around 5:50 p.m., near his home, said North Chicago Lt. George McClary.

Lake County Coroner Dr. Richard Keller said Tuesday that Ortiz was pronounced dead of multiple internal injuries at 6:50 p.m. at Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan .

While it is unclear which direction the car was headed after the collision, police say the vehicle has extensive body damage.

McClary said investigators are attempting to determine if the driver of the vehicle hit Ortiz intentionally before speeding from the scene.
