Kyle takes on Washington
Last-day filers
In a turnabout from his position Friday, Lake County Board member Angelo Kyle of Waukegan filed election petitions Monday to take on state Rep. Eddie Washington of Waukegan in the Democratic primary.
Other final-day filers set up a few more contested races in the Feb. 2 primary election, but most local Lake County races will remain uncontested until the Nov. 2 general election next year.
Monday was the last day for established-party candidates to file for election. Independents may circulate petitions beginning March 23, and must file for the Nov. 2, 2010 election from June 15 through June 21.
Kyle said Friday he had decided not run against Washington due to divisions in the community resulting from the close 2008 primary contest between the two Waukegan Democrats.
But Kyle said Monday that he is "reconsidering" his position after hearing from numerous people over the weekend who asked him to run. Associates filed his nominating petitions in Springfield late Monday morning.
In other local races, the office of sheriff is the only countywide seat with a primary contest. Some County Board, State House and North Shore Sanitary District seats also feature primary contests.
In the Democratic primary race for sheriff, Beach Park resident Douglas Roberts, a longtime attorney in Waukegan, and former sheriff's deputy John Krempotic of North Chicago will battle to face incumbent Republican Sheriff Mark Curran in November.
In Lake County Board District 4, Democrats Robert Marabella of Winthrop Harbor and Beverly Mull of Zion square off in the primary for the chance to face incumbent Republican Brent Paxton of Zion in the general election.
Appointed Republican incumbent Craig Taylor of Lake Zurich faces a primary challenge from Republican Dave Weisz of Kildeer in County Board District 19.
In the 62nd House District, State Rep. Sandy Cole, R-Grayslake, will see a ballot challenge from Republican Paul Mitchell of Hainesville in the primary election.
In the 8th Congressional District, five Republican candidates are vying in the primary for the chance to face incumbent U.S. Rep. Melissa Bean, D-Barrington, in the November General Election.
Five Republicans and three Democrats are running in primary races for the 10th Congressional District seat being vacated by U.S. Rep Mark Kirk, R-Highland Park, who is running for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama.
