Round Lake man nabbed retrieving ransom

Chicago police cite drug connection in kidnapping

November 2, 2009

CHICAGO -- A Round Lake man was among four people charged over the weekend with kidnapping a man Thursday in the Bridgeport neighborhood.

Jeffrey J. Hollinghead, 43, was held in lieu of $150,000 bond following a bond hearing on Saturday. Chicago police said he was arrested in the act of picking up ransom money demanded in the case.

Also held in lieu of $150,000 bond were Donald W. Hines, 39, of Aurora and Kevin A. Koonce, 25, of Villa Park. All are charged with kidnapping and home invasion with a firearm.

Bond was set at $175,000 for the fourth suspect, Curtis A. Sanders, 34, of Chicago, who has a previous felony drug conviction.

The four kidnapped a 28-year-old man from a home in the 3700 block of South Union Avenue, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Martha Kross.

The men allegedly demanded ransom from the victim's family.

Police say the crime was drug related.

Hollinghead went to a trash can to pick up the ransom, spotted police, dropped the ransom and tried to escape, Kross said.
