Zion man charged in car-bus crash

October 31, 2009

WAUKEGAN -- A school bus and a car collided Friday at the intersection of Washington Street and Keller Avenue.

Police Lt. Edward Fitzgerald said the accident occured at 11:45 a.m. A late-model Mercury Sable driven by Michael Tolbert, 47, of Zion crashed into the bus carrying three children and a teacher's aide.

Witnesses said Tolbert was traveling east on Washington Street when he tried to stop the car after the traffic light turned red. The Sable slid into the bus as it was turning left onto Keller Avenue.

Tolbert was taken to Vista Medical Center West, where he was treated and released.

No one on the bus was injured, police said.

Tolbert, of the 2900 block of Gabriel Avenue, was charged with driving without insurance, improper use of registration, disobeying a red light, and driving without valid registration.
