Kyle won't run against Eddie Washington
Lake County Board member Angelo Kyle of Waukegan said Friday that he will not to run for the 60th House District seat held by state Rep. Eddie Washington, D-Waukegan.
"I've had heart-to-heart conversations with a lot of advisers and people in the community, and I've decided I'm not going to seek election to that position," Kyle said. "There was a lot of division in the community as a result of the last time I ran. It caused divisions among churches, and even divisions among ministers."
Kyle, who had circulated election petitions for the House seat, said he will instead continue to concentrate his efforts on the County Board, where his seat is not up for election next year.
Kyle lost a close Democratic primary race to Washington in 2008. Washington received 3,911 votes, or 42.5 percent, to Kyle's 3,790 votes, 41.2 percent. A third candidate, Tony Elam of Waukegan, finished third with 1,495 votes, or 16.2 percent.
Barring a last-minute flurry of filings, the Feb. 2 primary is looking pretty uneventful regarding Lake County races, with the exception of a Democratic primary contest for the office of sheriff.
In that race, Waukegan attorney Douglas Roberts is pitted against former sheriff's deputy John Krempotic of Lake Bluff.
Krempotic said he has "some good ideas and plans for the department," including thoughts on how to improve highway patrol services and increase personnel without hiking the budget.
Roberts, who has been a criminal defense trial and appeal lawyer locally for 28 years, said he has worked with police throughout his career. Running for sheriff "is something that I believe I have to do," he said.
Two Beach Park Democrats, Sharon Carmody and Preston Carter, will square off in the primary for a seat in North Shore Sanitary District Ward 1. Republican incumbent John Paxton has also filed for re-election in that ward.
Several countywide and County Board races will be determined in the Nov. 2 general election.
On Thursday, Democrat Kay Hoogland filed election petitions in County Board District 18, where appointed Republican incumbent Aaron Lawlor of Vernon Hills has also filed for election.
Filing for the Feb. 2 primary ends at 5 p.m. Monday.
