Five community programs get recognition from AT&T
WAUKEGAN -- Five community programs have earned special recognition and money for service to the community as recipients of AT&T Illinois Beyond the Call Community Awards.
Awards were presented to Waukegan Township Senior Walk, Waukegan Township Pace Bus Pass Program, North Chicago Jazz Steppers, Mary's Mission and the NAACP Act-So Scholarship Program. Each group receives a $500 stipend in recognition of outstanding commitment and service to people in their local community.
"I thank God to have committed and caring groups that do important work to improve the quality of life in communities throughout my legislative district," said state Rep. Eddie Washington, D-Waukegan, who nominated the groups for the honors.
"AT&T Illinois appreciates the work of these community groups and programs that are doing important work connecting people and improving the quality of life in our local communities," said Marc Blakeman, AT&T Illinois regional vice president, external affairs.
The Waukegan Township Senior Walk provides no-cost transportation to medical appointments, no-cost lawn maintenance and snow removal, and weekly trips to grocery stores and other services to seniors.
The Waukegan Township Pace Bus Pass Program assists in securing daily bus passes for general assistance clients, allowing clients to seek employment and access to medical care.
The North Chicago Jazz Steppers are the national championship drill team of children and teens from North Chicago.
Mary's Mission is the transitional home in Waukegan that provides housing and basic needs for adults.
The NAACP's "ACT-SO" program awards scholarships to local students seeking to continue their education at a college or university.
