Round Lake teen dies in Lakemoor crash

October 26, 2009

An 18-year-old Round Lake teenager was killed and several others injured during an early morning traffic accident on Route 120 in Lakemoor.

Leonardo Elias, of 1610 N. Channel, who was a passenger in a red van, was pronounced dead at the scene Sunday just before 3 a.m., McHenry County Coroner officials said.

Lakemoor Police Chief Glenn Leonard said the vehicle was headed westbound on Tia Juana Street at a high rate of speed when it struck the curb, drove off a driveway and hit a tree near Lakeview Street.

Investigators said the vehicle finally stopped in the 500 block of Rand Road along Route 120 between Tia Juana and Lakeview drives.

Another passenger in the van, 18-year-old Elvin Luna, of McHenry, was trapped in the van in the front passenger seat. Luna was extricated from the vehicle and flown via Flight for Life to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Later, rescue personnel located 23-year-old Uri Herra of McHenry outside the van. He was transported to Centegra Hospital in McHenry.

Also transported to area hospitals were Jose Maldonado, 18, Sergio Mendez, 17, Francisco Trejo, 19 and Jorge Sanchez, 21, all of McHenry. The condition of the injured individuals is unknown.

Leonard said the Lake County Major Crash Accident Investigation Team is investigating the accident along with the Lake and McHenry County Sheriff's Departments. No charges have been filed as authorities are determining who was driving the van at the time of the crash.
