Federal grants might become available to save public safety jobs threatened by Waukegan's looming budget deficit. Meanwhile, Mayor Robert Sabonjian said it still looks like hard decisions will have to be made. He said federal dollars might cover some salaries of firefighters and police officers.

Freight train fatally strikes woman in Gurnee
11:47AM: Lake County Sheriff's police are investigating the death of a Park City woman struck and killed by a freight train early Friday morning in unincorporated Gurnee.

Doc suspects broad B-12 deficiency
If you are feeling fatigued and moody, maybe even a bit forgetful, the culprit could be an easily remedied, but perhaps underdiagnosed, condition -- vitamin B-12 deficiency. Gurnee physician Andrew Savin said he is concerned that a trend toward vitamin B-12 deficiency, perhaps linked to modern diets, is slipping under the radar.

Southsiders were surprised when 25 African youth descended on their neighborhood this week and gave an impromptu performance. The Matsiko Children's Choir, 25 children from Uganda, East Africa, sang and danced using a vacant lot near Oak and Liberty streets as their stage.




With five of its top six players returning from the most successful club in school history, Waukegan High is a basketball team with gigantic expectations, and a similar-size target on its collective back. The one missing piece from last season's scrambling, high-flying Dogs is Colin Nickerson.



The Lindenhurst Area Soccer Club's girls under-9 travel team completed an extraordinary fall/spring season in which the Twisters took to the pitch 26 times and never walked off it a loser. The squad went 21-0-5 in its first year together in the C" East Division of the Illinois Women's Soccer League.




Laremont classes hold holiday parade
Wheelchairs decked out in crepe paper. Poster-size renderings of the American Flag. A Statue of Liberty costume. These were among the decorations in a special Fourth of July parade held Thursday in Gages Lake by 80 Laremont School students with severe to profound mental impairment or multiple disabilities.
