Believe it or not, spring is not so far away. It's time to start thinking about gardening, and it's really time we started planting rain gardens. Our eco-system depends on it.
Plan: Your rain garden
Show: Old House New House
Little bit: City and country
Garden: Yellow is hot
Condos: City values skid
Really hot: Old stoves
Find: Foreclosures

The Dems take a Mulligan

The Hound could quote Yakim Smirnoff about "What a country!", but in fact what happened since Feb. 2 to the Illinois Democratic Party could only take place here in the not-so-great Land of Lincoln. Dem party bosses didn't learn from the Rod Blagojevich-Roland Burris-Pat Quinn debacle. So they got a refresher course from Scott Lee Cohen, the party's former lite governor candidate.

Signs will be posted at village entrances on routes 83, 173 and 59 honoring the accomplishment of Antioch Viking cheerleaders, state

With Hall of Fame banners acting as a backdrop, the eight newest
members of the College of Lake County Lancers athletic greats joined
the school's select pantheon last week in a fieldhouse ceremony. Former female athletes dominated the proceedings, with three soccer and three volleyball players gaining the ultimate CLC sports honor.

You have to give the girls who play basketball for Grayslake North High credit. Trailing 27-15 at halftime to a good Deerfield squad, the Knights couldn't have been blamed for conceding the game and throwing in the proverbial towel. But not these girls.
Seniors stay active in county communities

The dark days of winter are winding down, but not fast enough, and
moods can sink faster than last year's 401(k). But residents of Lake County senior communities have found a cheap and effective treatment for "wintertime declines in serotonin availability throughout the brain." They make their own sunshine by seeking out fun and friendship.

Ali chooses job over chance to marry Jake
Paige Wiser: Scary but true: While many companies offer sick leave, maternity leave
and paternity leave, there is still no official recognition for
reality-show leave. Our bachelor Jake learned this the hard way when
Ali, one of the final four, told him she'd been gone too long and had
to choose between him and her job.
