Steel curtain for OMC

The 5,000 tons of steel taken down this spring and summer at the former Outboard Marine Corp. property couldn't be set out at the curb, but most of if ended up being recycled anyway as crews tackled a key component in the lakefront's environmental cleanup. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency project manager Kevin Adler said two-thirds of the steel was sent to Gary, Ind., for recycling.
Armed robber sought

Police and Lake County Crime Stoppers are seeking information regarding an attempted armed robbery of a liquor store. The crime occurred at Foremost Liquor Store, 145 S. Route 45 just before 11 p.m. June 22, police said. The suspect entered the business and collected several items from the shelves and approached an employee at the cash register.

Five-year-old Hurricane Harbor will be getting an upgrade for the 2011 operating season, as Six Flags Great America revealed Wednesday - via its Facebook site - the waterpark is slated for a 130,000-square-foot addition.

Mundelein's Perreault had the best one and it carried her to victory in the county meet. In the sport of high-school cross country, you don't get a much more dramatic finish than this: Three girls sprinting toward the finish line, matching stride for stride, with victory within reach for each of them.

What's better than a golfer experiencing the thrill of a lifetime by carding a hole in one at his local course? How about two golfers doing it on the same day at, yes, the same course. That's what happened last Sunday at Bonnie Brook Golf Course in Waukegan, as Bob Fuller of Libertyville and Jeff Donohoe of Gurnee each experienced the thrill of writing down a "1" on their scoreboard.

Generals Grant, Lee, Custer, Jackson, Thomas and Morgan; Senator Douglas, President and Mrs. Lincoln, Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth will all be on hand for the eighth annual Lake Villa Civil War Days Sept. 18 and 19 at Longwood Centre Park and the grounds of Lehmann Mansion. Missing from the lineup of events this year is The Civil War Ball, canceled last year because of wet weather.

We now know who will cut a rug on the next "Dancing With the Stars." But do you know who turned ABC down? According to a source involved with casting, the network approached Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg to join the dance card for the show's 11th cycle but was unable to secure him.
