Trail Marker Trees
Once upon a time Native Americans in the Great Lakes region used trees as navigating tools. These Trail Marker Trees once numbered in the hundreds, but now only a few remain with their proponents closely guarding their locations to ensure their safety. Antioch artist Dennis Downes has dedicated himself to these icons.

Who says that kids today don't have any imagination. Certainly not anyone who recently was at the skateboard facility that is located in Bowen Park on Waukegan's far northeast side. In order to turn skateboarding into some semblance of a competition, the skaters reached back into the past for our old basketball game of "H-O-R-S-E."

The Illinois Orangemen youth basketball team finished fourth in the YBOA national tournament in the 14-under age division (players entering high school in the fall). Several members of the team are from this area, including three starters -- Steven Mercado and Akeem Springs from Waukegan, and JoVaughn Gaines of Gurnee/Warren High).

Where's Charlie? Pigging out at the barbecue
Crashing a family's Fourth of July barbecue could have been a hugely awkward experience, but not when your host is one of 12 children. When I arrived at Mike Fassbinder's family pig roast on Saturday, I was relieved to see a big crowd gathered on the lawn overlooking the sunset on Fox Lake. But what seemed large to me didn't to the family.
