WHEATON -- Naperville North is in the midst of playing five games in five days, so perhaps the Huskies could have used the extra rest.
Once Wheaton North scored nine runs in the first two innings, thoughts turned to an early ending Thursday. That idea solidified by the time Matt Palackdharry's shot disappeared beyond the wall in left field for a three-run homer in the fourth.
And after only five innings in Wheaton, the Falcons had grabbed a 14-3 victory in what could turn out to be a critical early series in the DuPage Valley Conference race.
"They got the key hits. They got people on base. They moved the ball," Naperville North coach Carl Hunckler said. "The end."
The series began Monday with the Huskies securing a 6-5 win. Wheaton North (10-2, 5-1 DVC), ranked 10th by the Chicago Sun-Times, responded Wednesday with a 14-2 victory that looked a lot like Thursday's.
"Our pitchers definitely learned that if you pitch a great game and make a couple mistakes, then you pay for it," said Naperville North catcher David McWilliams, who drove in two runs Thursday. "We only made a couple mistakes with our pitches and that's how they got their home runs. That's how we walked a couple guys and then that just leads to (an) avalanche."
Still, one series won't necessarily define the veteran Huskies (10-4, 4-2), who were on a seven-game winning streak earlier this week. And they still have 71 percent of their DVC games left to play.
"Our confidence (has) certainly been tested the last two days," Hunckler said. "We're fortunate because we got another game scheduled (today at Glenbard West)."
