North, Benet advance with shutouts

Third-seeded Naperville North didn't score its first goal against No. 5 Plainfield Central until the 65th minute of their regional championship game on Friday in Naperville.

With 15 minutes to play, senior Tyler Cortez scored on an assist by junior Ediz Yorulmazoglu to take a 1-0 lead.

Yorulmazoglu then assisted Justin Meyer in the 77th minute to win 2-0.

The Huskies will play No. 2 Naperville Central in the second Neuqua Valley Sectional semifinal on Tuesday at Neuqua.

North beat Central 6-1 in DuPage Valley Conference play Sept. 20 at North. Yet Central ended up winning the league title with a 6-1 record.

Benet 1, Batavia 0
Redwings junior midfielder Rory Burke scored the game's lone goal in the 31st minute to win the East Aurora Regional on Friday.

Fourth-seeded Benet will play top-seeded and nationally-ranked Neuqua Valley in the first Neuqua Valley Sectional semifinal on Tuesday.

The winner will then play the victor of the Central-North game for the sectional championship on Thursday at Neuqua.

North has won three straight regionals, Central two, Benet two and Neuqua one.
