Benet senior center Joe Meyerhoff has signed with Utah Valley University, an independent Division I basketball program that will begin play in the Great West Conference next season.

The 6-foot-8-inch Meyerhoff averaged 12.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game for the Redwings last season. He earned his scholarship relatively late in the process, particularly in a culture where eighth-graders can make verbal commitments to colleges.

"They started watching him later in the season. He obviously played pretty well down the stretch," Benet coach Gene Heidkamp said. "They had a need for (a) post player."

The Wolverines are led by Dick Hunsaker, who previously held the head job at Ball State and served as Utah's interim coach in 2000-01 while subbing for Rick Majerus. Hunsaker has guided the program from the junior college to Division I level, and Utah Valley went 17-11 last season.

The Great West is diverse geographically -- the New Jersey Institute of Technology and University of Texas-Pan American have joined -- but Meyerhoff should get homecoming-type games throughout his career. Chicago State will also begin league play with the 2009-10 season.
