LOMBARD -- Benet coach Gary Goforth was happy with the progress his Redwings made between their Week 1 loss to Oswego and their Week 2 matchup with Montini.

Unfortunately for Benet, that did not translate to a win. Despite several chances in Montini territory in the second half, the Redwings were edged 14-6 in a nonconference contest Saturday.

Benet led 6-0 in the second quarter, but Montini scored two touchdowns before the half and held on for the win.

"We improved so much from Week 1 to Week 2," Goforth said. "If we can do that next week (in the East Suburban Catholic opener against St. Joseph), we'll be OK. I like what the kids did. We had a chance in the second half and couldn't do it. That's what it comes down to."

Benet (0-2) dominated early. The Redwings forced two turnovers in the first quarter - a fumble recovery from Dan Finan on the second play of the game and an interception by Ryan Mitchell. But they could not score on either possession.

Benet got on the board first, with 9:27 left in the second quarter. On fourth-and-5 from Montini's 18, Benet appeared to get a break on a 16-yard completion from Jimmy Riley to Philip Schmidt. Schmidt appeared to be out of bounds, but the referee called it a catch. On the next play, Riley dropped the snap out of the shotgun and scooped the ball up and lofted a 2-yard strike to Neil Ostrander on a broken play to grab a 6-0 lead.

The lead was short-lived, however. Montini (2-0) responded with an 11-play, 64-yard drive, capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass from Tom DiCristina to Brendan Shannon, to give the Broncos a 7-6 lead.

After forcing a Benet three-and-out, Montini senior Grant Goebel out-jumped Benet defender T.J. Milano for a 29-yard touchdown and a 14-6 lead.
