The other teams in action
Naperville North vs. Oswego East
When: 7:30 tonight.
Last week: Naperville North defeated Neuqua Valley 41-14; Oswego East beat St. Joseph's 53-19.
What to expect: This may not be an offensive shootout. Oswego East remains on the rise, considering the varsity program has only two years' experience. The Wolves, led by senior quarterback Brad Crackel, scored more points last week than they managed during the entire 2005 season. The Wolves feature junior running backs Steve Rivera and TaDarrius Douglas along with wideout Nick Petkunas.
Still, expect North to run away with this one and enter league play unbeaten. If North does win, coach Larry McKeon will pass former Naperville Central coach Joe Bunge on the all-time Illinois wins list with 235, and fall into a tie for 15th all-time.
The Sun's pick: North.
Neuqua Valley at Plainfield Central
When: 7:30 tonight.
Last week: Neuqua lost 41-14 to Naperville North; Plainfield Central fell to Elgin 27-18.
What to expect: Neuqua has struggled against Plainfield Central, but has won three of the last four meetings. This time, Neuqua will need to shore up its defense, which allowed 413 yards last week. Left end John Quill's return from suspension should help, as should a couple of shifts in personnel. Senior A.J. Jordan moves from strong safety to right end, while senior Joey Capone makes his first start at weak-side linebacker. The defense will have to watch out for Central's twin-brother tandem of quarterback Cyle (250 passing yards vs. Elgin) and wide receiver Chris Schultz. Neuqua is still without right tackle Jeff Radek, who serves the final game of this suspension tonight. Also missing is tight end Regi Miskel, who injured his right knee late in the first half against the Huskies.
The Sun's pick: Neuqua.
