More week 2 football action

August 31, 2007

Benet vs. Montini

When: 7:30 tonight.

Last week: Benet lost to Oswego 40-0; Montini beat Sacred Heart-Griffin (Springfield) 34-24.

What to expect: The Redwings are coming off a rough season-opening defeat at Oswego, and it doesn't get any easier as they host Montini. The Broncos opened their 2007 campaign by knocking off two-time defending Class 5A champion Sacred Heart-Griffin, ending the Cyclones' 28-game winning streak in the process. Junior quarterback Tommy DiCristina led the way in his first varsity start, completing 16 of 20 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns, and rushing 14 times for 51 yards and another score. The Broncos won a state title in 2004. The good news for Benet is that following a blowout loss to Oswego in 2006's first game, the Redwings rebounded to beat Montini 35-21 the next week.

The Sun's pick: Montini.

Lincoln-Way East at St. Charles East

When: 7 tonight.

Last week: Lincoln-Way East beat Providence 14-6; St. Charles East beat Batavia 30-7.

What to expect: Defensive end Dan Giordano returns from a one-game suspension for Lincoln-Way East. Nick Pecho had two interceptions, and the defensive line of Kyle Smith, Chris Narel, T.J. Jackson and Uchenna Ebiringah had six sacks versus Providence. Running back Dan Cebula carries the offensive load. St. Charles East offensive linemen Alex Putz, Blake Griffiths, Ricky Hagedorn, Kevin Fredericks and Brennan Walls opened holes for Wes Allen and protected quarterback Sam Gunther versus Batavia. Dave Mashal, Mike Hoscheit and Pat Friel lead a strong defense.
