'Wild Things' invade Spring Brook Elementary

November 5, 2009

Spring Brook Elementary School hosted a family literacy event Oct. 29 focused on Maurice Sendak's book, "Where the Wild Things Are."

About 148 people joined the wild rumpus to celebrate reading. Celeste Giles, a librarian from the Naperville Public Library; Linda McCoy, a reading specialist at Spring Brook; and Natalie Hoyle, Spring Brook's Library Media Center director, emphasized the importance of reading aloud to children for at least 20 minutes a day.

"Children need to find books that are just the right fit," said McCoy. "Just like shoes fit the activity, books too should have a purpose."

"My goal is to pass on a love of reading to Spring Brook students by being a passionate reader, book talking and motivating students to read," added Hoyle.

After kids made their own wild thing puppets, Hoyle and Stuart Vance, a kindergarten teacher at Spring Brook, treated the audience to a dramatic reading of "Where the Wild Things Are."
