A fire evacuated Scott School this morning. No injuries were reported. Fire officials said they received a call shortly before 10 a.m. from an automatic fire alarm from Scott School, 500 Warwick Drive.

To mammogram or not to mammogram? That was the question raised this week by a government panel of scientists and doctors who claim that 50 is the new 40 when it comes to the age when women should get the cancer screening test.

Naperville Police Thursday night confiscated the property of Scott Huber from the downtown parking garage. Huber said he called police when he returned from a fast food restaurant and found that his property was gone. Police told Huber they had deemed the belongings abandoned property. Huber is planning to claim the property at the Naperville police station.

The Naperville Area Homeowner's Confederation monthly meeting focused on a couple of areas dear to everyone's heart Thursday: city finances and property taxes.

Two Cook County state's attorney's investigators have been fired after a prisoner escaped from their custody — discipline that one of their attorneys is calling "an overreaction."

Nonprofit agencies waiting to make plans with their state funding will have to wait until Gov. Pat Quinn gives his state budget address in March, the governor said in a visit to Naperville on Thursday.

Gov. Pat Quinn said Thursday that a tax increase he proposed earlier in the year would be the best way to help the Fox Valley's social services, some of whom have not received any state money in five months.

Larry's Diner typically does a brisk business. But on Thanksgiving, when most people eat at home, Larry's is busiest of all. That's because senior citizens can eat a holiday feast for free that day. This Thanksgiving, restaurant owner Kostas Alexopoulos, his family and staff will host the 16th annual dinner. People 62 and older will dine for free from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the restaurant, on the corner of Lockport Street and Van Dyke Road in Plainfield.

The state liquor commission wants cities to follow the example of Yorkville, Geneva and Naperville and require training for anyone serving, distributing or otherwise selling alcohol.

The Will County Board unanimously approved a 2010 budget Thursday. The county board had to grapple with huge projected deficits early in the budgeting process. But the final document is balanced.

Mia Hays didn't have the storybook senior year of high school. Hanging out with friends, going to prom and graduation mean something completely different when you're pregnant. Being a mom at 18 does, too. "My main priority has been my daughter for two years," said Hays, now 20. "... It got to the point where I felt I was in prison in my own life." So she disappeared for nearly two months.

An election board next month will hear objections to nominating petitions of three local judicial candidates. The candidates, running in the Feb. 2 primary next year, are seeking judge positions in the 12th Judicial Circuit, covering Will County.

The idea of armed police officers walking through grade-school corridors didn't sit well with many educators in the 1980s. Police officers weren't too keen on the idea, either. But both sides agreed to try it, and in 1986, the first Drug Abuse Resistance Education programs began in Illinois.

Banning video gaming in Will County will keep union laborers from working and much-needed road and bridge improvements from being done, union representatives said Wednesday night.

On the 1300 block of Ferry Road at 6:04 p.m. Wednesday,  a motorist reported his vehicle was struck by a car driven by a man described as white and in his 50s, with graying hair and a heavy build.

DuPage Children's Museum hours are extended until 8 p.m. Fridays to provide greater access to museum exhibits and activities and to give families with working parents and siblings who attend school during the week more opportunities to enjoy time together.
