District 204 lawsuit ::

Wednesday, May 7, 2008
It was a formality, but before the Indian Prairie School District 204 was to begin work on the new school on Eola Road, the Aurora City Council needed to approve an amended annexation agreement for the 84-acre site.

Neighborhood Schools for Our Children and District 204 will try mediation. But if that doesn't work, both sides are preparing to argue the merits of the injunction case May 23 before Judge Kenneth Popejoy, who will rule on the school district's motion to dismiss the suit brought about by the group.

A judge denied Neighborhood Schools for Our Children's request for an expedited trial in May before Indian Prairie District 204 starts building Metea Valley High School.

A "for sale" sign may soon stand on a 25-acre tract that formerly was District 204's choice on which to build Metea Valley High School. If the Brach and Brodie trusts - the original owners of the land near 75th Street and Fort Hill Drive - don't want to buy back the property, the land will be put up for sale.

A last-minute filing by attorneys for Neighborhood Schools for Our Children is seeking to expedite the trial date for the group opposed to the construction of Metea Valley High School on any site other than the Brach-Brodie property.

Indian Prairie School District 204 closed the deal Wednesday on the property its board voted to purchased Monday.

Indian Prairie School District 204 closed the deal Wednesday on the property its board voted to purchased Monday. Indian Prairie School District 204 has announced a construction timeline for the 3,000-seat Metea Valley High School, which the district still intends to open for freshmen and sophomores in the fall of 2009. Also, the district has released environmental assessment information relevant to its plan to build the school on an 84-acre site now owned by St. John AME Church.

St. John AME Church doesn't have a home of its own, but it now has another $8 million with which to find one. That's how much more Indian Prairie School District will pay than the church paid for its Eola Road property when it purchased it from Commonwealth Edison in October 2003.

Indian Prairie School District 204's school board approved Monday the purchase of 84 acres along Eola Road in Aurora from St. John's African Methodist Episcopal Church for the construction of Metea Valley High School. The purchase should allow District 204 to open the 3,000-seat high school in the fall of 2009, as planned.

Even with the news Friday that could give new life to District 204's plans for building a third high school along Eola Road this week, critics of the site said the district should nevertheless abandon the location along Eola Road.

The subject line of the e-mail District 204 resident Chad Martinson sent to friends and family Thursday afternoon said it all: "utter disappointment."

Midwest Generation has decided not to sell a 37-acre portion of the property Indian Prairie School District has selected as the site of Metea Valley High School. A company spokesman confirmed Thursday that the company is no longer interested in selling the land.

Discussions of safety concerns regarding the proposed site for Metea Valley High School were partially had at Monday's Indian Prairie School District 204's board meeting.
