Naperville Central to honor past grads

Naperville Central High School will honor three distinguished graduates and a dedicated volunteer during its 13th annual alumni recognition ceremonies this week.

Central's Class of 2008 Honorees are the late Alfred Rubin, Rick Hitchcock, Marianne Lisson Kuhn and the late Clyde Sundquist.

Rubin, who died in 1997, graduated in 1938. An entrepreneur, Rubin founded and owned numerous Naperville food services, and was involved in numerous community youth groups and special organizations. Rubin also served in the U.S. Army Cavalry Unit, and received the silver star and Purple Heart for his military service.

Hitchcock graduated in 1971. He owns Hitchcock Design. He has been involved in the Naperville River Walk landscaping and continues to be involved in the community.

Lisson Kuhn graduated in 1973. She is an accomplished artist in Naperville, and she has been dedicated to preserving Naperville's history. Some of her drawings can be seen in various buildings and schools throughout Naperville.

Clyde Sundquist, who died in November, is the second nonalumnus to be recognized in this program. Sundquist worked for Naperville School District 203 for 18 years as its audio-visual and media support analyst. He was the heart and soul of the audio and visual portion of Central's alumni recognition program for many years.

Central will have an informal reception for these honorees at 7 tonight in the library at Naperville Central, 440. W. Aurora Ave., and will formally honor them during a ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Friday in the school's auditorium.

Central film club to host festival

The Naperville Central High School Film Club will be hosting its third annual Student Film Festival tonight.

The festival will feature some of the best short films and video projects created by Central students over the past school year. Audience members will receive a ballot and be asked to vote for their favorite films and performances throughout the program, and audience awards will be handed out at the end of the evening.

All of the films selected to be shown during the festival will be appropriate for a general audience.

In addition, information about the Naperville Independent Film Festival will be available at the event.

The festival will be at 7 p.m. tonight in the Little Theater at Naperville Central, 440 W. Aurora Ave.

Admission is $5, and proceeds will benefit the school's Film Club.

Dance to benefit North students

Naperville North Friends of Music is hosting its 19th annual Cotton Club North, a 1940s dance celebrating the music of the Big Band era, from 7 to 10 tonight at the Grand Ballroom of the Wyndham Hotel, 3000 Warrenville Road in Lisle.

Swing to the beat of music from Duke Ellington, Count Basie and others, performed by the talented Naperville North High School jazz bands and vocal jazz ensembles. Swing dance lessons will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. by Sterba's Dance Studio. Also, light snacks will be served and a silent auction offered.

Proceeds from the dance and the auction provide money to purchase instruments and equipment, and funds to provide outstanding clinicians to work with the student musicians.

Tickets can be purchased at the door for $25.
