Mom wants to share son's battle in Iraq

Comments

March 20, 2007

Cathy Henderson always knew her 23-year-old son, Jason, was going to be a soldier. And now he is, serving in Iraq.

"It wasn't a surprise for me," Henderson said. "But I don't like watching the news."

Jason is stationed in Ramadi, one of the most dangerous places in Iraq, where roadside bombings and sniper shootings are routine and chlorine gas attacks are becoming the insurgent's latest tactic of choice.

Jason's upbeat nature and frequent contact with his mother help her get through the constant worrying for his safety.

"I've always loved the way he writes," said Henderson, who gets long letters from Jason about once a month. "He's a storyteller."

Henderson said she chose to share the following letters from Jason with The Sun because she wants the people of Naperville, many of whom are part of Jason's support group, to know how Jason is doing and what life is like over there.

"He has a huge support base in Naperville," Henderson said, citing church groups, schools and sports teams Jason has participated in. "People need to see these (letters). People need to understand."
